One Graphics Card Equals Twelve "Little DDRs": the High-Density Memory Category Still Sold by the Kilo

Graphics cards have the highest VRAM die density of any consumer electronic: an RTX 3060 12GB carries 12 GDDR6 dies, and an RTX 4090 24GB carries 24 GDDR6X dies. In terms of circulating volume and retirement speed, the only comparable wave is the second mining-card retirement — through 2025-2026, first-generation RTX 30 mining cards and RTX 40 gaming cards upgraded during rational replacement cycles entered the teardown window at the same time, sending tens of millions of GDDR6/GDDR6X dies from graphics cards into the recycling channel every year. Yet almost all of this VRAM still moves as whole cards or mixed scrap: good dies worth CNY 10-40 each routinely lose half their value when priced through the residual value of a whole card. The real value of a recycled graphics card is not the cooler or the PCB — it is those 12-24 BGA dies.

VRAM Is Not Regular Memory: Interface, Package and Speed Grade Decide the Value

GDDR6/GDDR6X is graphics double-data-rate DRAM made exclusively for GPUs and is not interchangeable with DDR4/DDR5 — the most common mistake in recycling is quoting VRAM with DDR pricing. Two families, with clear generational tiers: GDDR6 (Samsung K4ZAF325BM, Micron MT61K256M32JE, SK Hynix H56G42AS8DX — the workhorse of RTX 20/30/40 and RX 5000/6000/7000, 8Gb at 12-18Gbps); GDDR6X (produced only by Micron — the MT61K512M32KHD family, exclusive to NVIDIA RTX 3070 and above, 16Gb at 19-24Gbps). The value split is the speed grade: a 12Gbps RTX 2060-era die and a 24Gbps RTX 4090 flagship die differ nearly tenfold in buyback price, so always read the full suffix (HC14 = 14Gbps, HC16 = 16Gbps, KHD-21 = 21Gbps).

Testing and Verification: How Good Dies Are Proven

VRAM testing follows a fixed, manageable flow: first read the marking — confirm the vendor prefix (K4ZAF/Samsung, MT61K/Micron, H56G/SK Hynix) and the speed suffix; sanded and remarked dies are downgraded on sight. Second, power-on verification — solder the dies onto a modified GPU test bench or an equivalent card and run a VRAM stress test (MemTest Vulkan, OCCT VRAM); dies that pass stable, long-duration testing price as good stock. Third, lot consistency — mixed-speed and mixed-lot dies are sorted to their own grade. Three conditions are downgraded on sight: sanded parts, remarked parts, and "soft failure" dies — cold solder or long-term full-load overheating, which is especially common on mining-card stock — keep them on their own line and never quote them at gaming-card good-die pricing.

Three Supply Sources: Second-Wave Mining Cards, Upgrade Cycles and Whole-Card Replacement

Trends: GDDR7 Ramps, and GDDR6 Enters Its "Repair Golden Age"

Both ends of VRAM recycling are moving the right way in 2026. On the supply side, with RTX 50-series fully on GDDR7, Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix are steadily winding down GDDR6 production — harvested stock of EOL parts is rising, not falling, in graphics-card repair channels. On the demand side, hundreds of millions of RTX 30/40 and RX 6000/7000 cards remain in service, and VRAM cold-solder failure is the #1 repair failure mode — repair shops need same-speed harvested dies steadily and pay a premium for verified good stock. 16Gbps high-speed parts are the best-selling tier right now — wide repair margins, high pass rates and fast turnover; GDDR6X 24Gbps flagship dies command the highest unit price but move slowly, so they belong on locked-channel sales. Pulling VRAM out of "whole-card residual value" and pricing it by speed grade is the single most profitable improvement in graphics-card recycling.

Advice for Recyclers

MemoryRecycle runs full testing and grading lines for GDDR6/GDDR6X, DDR4/DDR5, eMMC, UFS and NAND dies covering Samsung, Micron, SK Hynix, Kioxia, GigaDevice and YMTC.
